Cymbal Spot Open (Renegades)

ey folks. You may have noticed that we had three cymbal players for the majority of the weekend. Well, over the weekend we had a cymbal spot open up, when a member decided that drum corps just wasn't for her.

The timing of this is obviously not great for the corps, but I would like to try to fill her spot immediately. If anyone knows someone who would like to jump in now (i.e. this weekend), please let me know. I don't think it is realistic for anyone to be "in" for the North Carolina field show (maybe LMS though), but we want them in the mix as soon as humanly possible.

If not, we go three cyms, no big deal.

Thanks,

Please email:

KYLD'S `MORNING DOGHOUSE' MISSING FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE DAY

By Brad Kava

Mercury News

The popular ``Morning Doghouse'' show on KYLD (94.9 FM) was off the air Tuesday, its third consecutive day, but the program director wouldn't say why.

The only clue to the morning team of Elvis, J.V. and producer Hollywood's absence came in the form of letters of complaint by an attorney and a board member for San Francisco Renegages Drum and Bugle Corps. The group sent representatives to the morning show Thursday to promote an annual fundraiser.

On and off the air, corps members said, they were insulted by members of the morning program, based in San Francisco. Lisa Johnson, a corps board member, said the team of Elvis, and a man identified as ``the station retard,'' made lewd remarks to her and leered.

Station officials said ``no comment'' about the situation.

``That's our official line,'' said Program Director Dennis Martinez. ``No comment.''

When asked when the Doghouse might be back, he said:

In a letter to the station's local management and its owners, Clear Channel Communications, of San Antonio, Johnson wrote, ``This was not `on air shtick.' This was tantamount to an ambush, an assault to Miss Kinoshita and myself, prior to going on the air to promote our show.'' Robin Kinoshita is a fellow board member of the group.

Then, according to the letter, Doghouse members lambasted one of the women with the corps, saying: ``you joined colorguard because you were too fat to be a cheerleader.''

The result on the fundraising attempt, said attorney and corps member Lee Rudnicki, was ``the business equivalent of Pearl Harbor.'' Rudnicki said the Doghouse members' comments effectively killed ticket sales.

Last year, Renegades members appeared on the show, which is rated in the Top Ten for the Bay Area, to promote their benefit show called ``The Loud Music Symposium.'' The treatment by the hosts was fine and the promotion helped ticket sales, Rudnicki said.

The Doghouse's career has been one of continual ups and downs. Last month, the show's hosts got some praise for inspiring San Jose students to stage a walk-out to protest budget cuts. The show has also raised money over the years for various charities.

But its members have also been charged with vandalism for a stunt that involved defacing a city sign for Castro Valley; and with illegally disposing of chemical wastes, for a stunt in which members doused themselves with oil and then poured it down a drain.

The show, which is marketed to young teens, has also broadcast adult themes, some of which echo the topics used by Howard Stern. Stern was dropped by Clear Channel, which alleged his shows were offensive.

SAN FRANCISCO: On 9:00 a.m. Thursday morning, April 21, the San Francisco Renegades will invade the studios of San Francisco radio station KYLD (94.9 FM) for a chaotic live on-air interview to promote Loud Music Symposium 6. The Renegades entourage will include drum major Greg Gilman and screaming Renegades lead soprano player Roland Garceau, whose sole mission is to crack the glass of the DJ booth with the loudest double-c in history. The evil Renegade covert operatives will be accompanied by members of Maximum Indifference and two very antagonized rappers from the Rebels of Rhythm (one of which is extremely beautiful).

North Coast Rock's First Rehearsal A Success!!!

On Wednesday, April 6th, North Coast Rock Drum and Bugle Corps held it’s first ever rehearsal at Revere Middle School in Bath, Ohio. The rehearsal was well attended in both brass and percussion and the people who came were very enthusiastic about bringing drum corps back to Cleveland, Ohio.

Rehearsal began with registration and a chance for the attendees to introduce themselves to one another. Everybody moved into the band room shortly after and the board of directors for North Coast Rock introduced themselves. Cary Reed, Director of Development for the corps, then presented a special plaque of appreciation to David Glasgow, Director of the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps of Canton, Ohio. David and the Bluecoats have been very supportive of North Coast Rock’s efforts to build into Cleveland’s newest all-age corps.

Once the speeches were finished, it was time for music! The horns and drums split into separate groups. Carl Diefenbach, Director of Operations, has arranged the brass book for the 2005 NCR mini-corps. The show title is “Around the World with North Coast Rock!” and includes Variations on a Korean Folk Song, Malaguena, and an American medley including America the Beautiful (think 1988 Velvet Knights). The horn line worked on Korean Folk Song and the America intro to the medley. The drum line, under the direction of Robert Goode, worked on warm-up exercises. At the end of rehearsal, the horn line performed America the Beautiful for the drum line. With the rehearsal over, the board thanked everybody for coming, reminded them of the next rehearsal on April 27th, and asked them to bring at least one friend for that rehearsal. The board also thanked Mr. Glasgow again for his continued support of NCR.

As stated above, the next rehearsal is April 27th, again at Revere Middle School. Start time is 6:30 PM. If you weren’t able to make it to the first rehearsal, now’s your chance to get on board. This corps has a future and it is bright!

Revere Middle School is located at:
3195 Spring Valley Road
Bath, Ohio 44333

If you are interested in joining North Coast Rock, please e-mail Kevin Gamin at northcoastrock@gcmpaa.org or call 440-212-2869. You can also visit the corps website at http://www.northcoastrock.org for more information.

North Coast Rock is a part of the Greater Cleveland Marching and Performing Arts Association, Inc., a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of music and the arts in the Cleveland, Ohio, area.

If anybody wants to help Momentum out, a local radio station is running a contest to pimp out a vehicle. One of the members of Momentum submitted the equipment truck as an entry. All you have to do is follow the link and vote a 10 for it, and then vote a 1 for the rides that are beating it. Thanks for the help! Lets win one for drumlines everywhere!

Renegades Drum Line Update, January 05

The Renegades drum line has taken a huge step up this winter and we plan to take this drum line back east and make our fellow west coast cats proud.

To say the snare line is rocking would be an understatement.

Mike French, center snare
BD and SCV center snare

Scott Kubitz
Phantom Regiment and BD snare

Kelly
BD snare

Dennis Mancini
SCV snare

Thom
BAC and Carolina Crown snare

Brandon Wilson
BD b snare

Earl Brown
Freelancers snare

Scott Slater
Valley Fever snare

Couple of other guys plan to show up at next camp in less than 2 weeks.

Currently 3 hard working tenors who are moving around the drums well. 1 or possibly 2 spots remain.
Bass drum line seeks 1 indivual.

This is indeed a rare opportunity to play some extra cool charts loaded with poop. As well this line is very aggressive and hell bent on being tasty clean with uniform technique.

Listen to what were throwing down: http://www.aegroup.com/renegades/

Cheese Balls
Mrs. Beasley
Mistletoe Beltbuckle
All loaded with modern cheese filled beats.

Our parking lot show will be one to appreciate.

Consider checking out the line at the next camp.

Thanks,
Dennis

DCI vs DCA vs Another circuit, Will it make the activity better

(POSTED BY A FRIEND FROM ANOTHER BOARD)

I've read many great (not good but great) arguements about the future of this activity. Someone always brings up how good DCA is doing. Maybe we should look at why it's growing and DCI is not.(I refrain from saying dying) When I say DCI I mean DCI and not Drum Corps. There is a difference and I'll explain it.

DCI is a very expense activity. With cost approaching $1,000,000 for a season for the larger corps and for smaller corps $500,000. And income never in the positive. How long will this go on. I said this before and will keep saying it. if these were REAL business' they would be shut down and the parts sold off to pay suppliers. Running in the negative every year is not the right way to do things.

DCI is making the activity more expensive. Now they have to buy amps and other electronic equipment to keep up. it was hard enough with just horns and drums.

DCI is a vicouis (sic) cycle. How many corps have died trying to chase the championship. All of them. No one really wants to have a horn line with only 20 players. They want to blow your face off. I love D2/3 more then open class. But doing what the big boys do will kill you ALMOST every time. But hey lets make the new minimum 150 players and raise the age to 25.

DCI has lost focus. This was an youth activity but how many youths are involved. One topic and post stated you need "kids" 19 and up to really compete. I thought you were an adult at 18. I consider my son a man since he turned 18. And this is where someone mentions D2/3. Yes you can march with the D2/3's but they want to be D1's so as they grow people get left behind. It happens. Very few people start a corps with the idea of keeping it at 40-50-75 players. Reduce the age back to 21 and limit the membership to 100. It

The DCI model will eventually fail unless sweeping changes are made. Cost MUST be reduced. I would rather see 60/80/100 corps with 80 people then 30 with 135. of the 150 "kids" who tried out for Crossmen, how many will go to Surf, LVK, or another local corps. 10-20-25. So you lose 100 kids who won't march corps. Reduce travel. One of the biggest cost is travel. I read figures of $5,000 to $10,000 a week. Leaving on Friday or Thursday night and doing weekend shows and occasional monday show will give you a chance to travel a decent distance (200-500 miles) have 25 shows a summer and reduce cost alot.

DCA is growing one, because the population is getting older. There are more people with time and money to do the weekend thing. Also the cost of a Senior Corps less because of the travel. Most shows are within driving distance or a nice weekend getaway.

DCA doesn't appear to be putting pressure on Corps to do more then they can afford. It's still horns and drums. A more purer form then what DCI has become.

DCA is pushing the growth of smaller Corps. with the expansion of Class A finals means more looks for the smaller guys.

There are always individual instances that show something to be wrong. yes Capital Regiment and Cascades are doing doing well. But how many juinor Corps have we lost in the last 2 weeks, month, 6 months, year. How many Seniors have we lost in the same amount of time. How many have we gotten. These smaller Corps are killing themselves to be on the top 12. Atlantic Star was started with the sole purpose of becoming a top level corps. How much money does that take. Millions before it happens because it doesn't happen overnight.

Yes we have more and more kids trying out but they have less and less places to march. See my comments about the Crossmen tryouts.
For those that like numbers of the 45 corps to compete in 1980 only 15 are still around. for 1974 only 10 are still here. for 1990 less then 15. Yes there are Corps to take thier place but how many other activities have this kind of turnover. And we're not losing the small corps but the big ones also, 27, Bridgemen, VK, Kingsmen, Avant Garde, Defenders, Gaurdsmen, Garfield Cadets (ok bad joke) but you understand where I'm coming from.

I'm going to put my money where my mouth is. I'm going to start a corps. But, they will not be on the field until 2007 or 2008. Why, because first I'm going to start a business that will support the activity. I have one in mind that has been on the marker for some time and going to the bank in the first week after Christmas. I would like to have an indoor guard and Drumline by this time next year. The 2006 a small performing group of 60 doing local shows at basketball games and indoor football games. Yes indoors. Only weekends.

I've been kicking the idea around for quite some time. I'm going to call it Delaware Education for the Arts. DEA.(yes I know but I like the name and what it stands for. My goal will be to Teach, Learn and Grow. I would like to give kids a chance who wouldn't march or play an instrument the oppurtunity to do do. Make it affordable and fun. No pressure on winning just being the best you can be. The most fun I ever had was on a losing bowling team. We were the worst in the league. But we had fun, Were the loudest and everyone wanted to be on it. It's about fun, period.

I'm not worried about a name yet. More worried about financies, getting a good board of directors together. (maybe finding someone that can spell better then me).

So bascially I'll try to change the activty from the inside. I'll still post and complain.
Fondest Drum Corps memories?

I remember we were at Mile High Stadium, performing right before Phantom. It has just started to rain as we did our last song.

As soon as Phantom started getting ready, it began to pour like crazy. Some of the worst rain I have been in. I remember their colorguard had thin red coctail dresses on, and they were completely drenched. Flagwork was really hard, but they pulled it off.

When we watched them, it was like the rain inspired them to perform even better. The guard was smiling, and horns seemed to be louder.

Its one of those moments where you realize why you are there. Why you eat crappy food and drink cool-aid every day. Why you sleep on hard gym floors and have co-ed freezing showers. Where a bus seat is the only place that you can establish an identity. Its about the art.

See? its nostalgia talking.

any one interested in collaborating on a marching drum unit with heavy funky beats? I'v been doing it for years and I love it, I got my rig (tom/timbale) from a dumpster, it was meant to be. I play bass drum with the extra action, and when there is no extra action to be had, I do this,...
I am tight with snare player, and am working with a few different bass drummers. also seeking bells, or other marching stick type drummers in oakland/SF.
have the proto material on c.d., it is a platform for expansion of the rhythmic structures involved. geared to parades, outdoor events, and freaky warehouse parties. this is raw, and live. it is primal and natural, and is good for funky dancers. can drive a scene or cultivate a following.

Hello all,

Allow me to introduce myself; my name is Mike and I used to march with the Santa Clara Vanguard for the years 1973 through 1975. I kind of happened along this tribe as I was scanning someone elses interests and tribes. Hmm. So are there any other old schoolers here? Who is into the SF Renegades and how are they doing?

Last year I was in the pit and this year I'm lucky enough to be one of the DM's I've been playing for 12 years and I currently one of the instructors for Arroyo Grande high. ummm yeah that's it. Talk to some folks later ^_^_v

Thought I might introduce myself..

I'm Danille (Danielle) I've been marching drum corps for 10 years, no longer a part of DCI since I'm 24, but I belong to DCA. Some of the corps I've marched with are Canadian Knights, Oakland Crusaders, North Shore, Kiwanis Kavaliers and now Kingston Grenadiers. Oh, and I'm from Canada. :oP

I march bass, I’ve tried snare, tenors, and even guard, but bass is my passion.

So yeah.. where has everyone else marched or are marching?

Pismo / Oceano Dunes gathering info

Pismo / Oceano Dunes info

April 16, 17, 18, (the weekend after Easter) we'll be gathering @ Oceano Dunes (Pismo Beach).

pismofiredrums.tribe.net

I recently flew up and scouted the area from the air, and it's a really great place for us to have the gathering.

I've also heard positive things from several other people who have been there for other gatherings.

I spoke at length with the rangers about the regulations there and fires and fire spinning are allowed.

There are restrooms at several locations along the beach and even a couple of places back in the "dunes"

Access is easy and at low tide ( I'll post the tide times later) you can , and I have personally done this myself , drive any normal car on the beach as long as you stay off the dry sand.

We have the obvious choice to camp on the beach or we can trek a bit back into the dunes. It would be kool to make our camp further back in the dunes and be a bit more private, but you'll need 4 wheel drive in the soft sand.

There is a guy that takes people on tours of the dunes that we could throw a few $$ to and he'll get us wherever we want to camp. (anybody 4wd equipped?)

Also there is an outfit that has 18ft fully equipped camping trailers that sleep 6 people.

They are $95 per nite and if you don't have towing capabilities, they'll drop it off and pick it up where ever you want on the beach for $50.
They have a furnished kitchen, shower, toilet, heater, and awning.

Can't imagine doing this and certainly not suggesting it, but, there are also some reasonable motels very near by if you're really not into camping. (definitely not a suggestion, just covering as many options as possible)

You can obviously set up camp wherever you like, but it works really well to set up in a big circle. Parking the vehicles on the outside provides a wind break with the center area for an open fire pit and spinning and drumming.

It's is a $10 per vehicle (not per person) charge to camp in the dunes. There's no other charge than that, but there is a big fine if you don't have an over nite pass.

I know many of you have already joined firedrums which was originally created to be the Pismo gathering info site.
But that site quickly evolved into a more general events and happenings site and is serving that purpose well.

So now we've started this site specifically for the Pismo gathering.
I know there are many more people interested in this gathering so PLEASE let everyone you can know about this tribe and take a minute to join.

And if you have any info, suggestions or ideas, please post them to this site.
Also, for anyone who has aged out of DCI -- check out the Senior and Alumni Corps in your area. Senior Corps in a blast and the best part: you age out when you die. Music does not end at 22.

I marched with Troopers back in '96. Was a real blast and made a lot of new friends. Was almost going to march in '97, but decided I was going to work instead...

I never was able to march. I audition and made pit for Crown back in 96. Went though the camps, and had to dropout before the tour. No $$.. sucks.
